Current events, past events

It has been quite awhile since I’ve posted anything. Since I’m sure that very few people actually read this page, its almost more for my own historical reference (I spent that whole month doing what?? Jesus I must be hard up). Now, to the meat and bones: what have I been up to in the past 3 months?

November: Too far back. I don’t remember doing anything. I believe that would have involved some finishing of Fall quarter, which went well. As far as the classes I took that quarter, the majority were either uninteresting or not very useful:

  • Database Concepts was a bit of a waste (5 weeks of “this is how you write a select statement in SQL, 5 weeks of “this is how you use Oracle”), although the professor is too nice of a guy to actually be angry at.
  • Computer Organization was quite a bit of fun. I find low-level programming very interesting, in more that a esoteric way. I enjoy understanding in general what my C or C++ code will compile to. I enjoy understanding where language concepts come from. I also appreciate the features that languages offer, and begin more strongly to dislike the ways in which certain professors profess the uselessness of these low-level concepts (read: Software Engineering professors. I quote: “Any program written in a language that uses pointers is badly designed and should be rewritten in a better language”. I shit you not.)
  • Data Communication and Networks – yes, we understand what a TCP stack is. No, you really don’t need to make us write another C++ application that sends or receives files over TCP. You’re going to make us write another one? Fuck you.
  • Introduction to CS Theory would have been more fun if we could have more meaningful discussions. I don’t believe that people are too stupid to understand the topics of the course, I just think that nobody is convinced of the importance of learning the topics, and therefore nobody applies themselves to the course. Interesting subject, not-so interesting class.

And that is it for November.

December: First few weeks of Winter quarter. The start of some great courses: Artificial Intelligence, Database Systems Implementation, Operating Systems I, and an honors colloquium class named “Traumatic Images”. Oh, and Christmas.

Christmas set me back my whole wallet. I considered filing for bankruptcy or prostituting myself. Haven’t filed for bankruptcy yet.

Which brings us to January, which is kicking ass so far. If I had posted this last week…well, I wouldn’t have posted this last week. I didn’t have time to do anything last week. And I actually should be studying for a midterm now. Mother of god.

Things are going well. That is all that is important. I am extremely happy with my work, my education, my life, my self-betterment, and my wonderful girlfriend. Everything else is just noise.
