free prescription drugs! so what?

If you haven’t seen it, Publix just announced that they will be giving away seven (7) common oral antibiotics (I admit, the first time I read this as oral contraceptives, since you don’t usually see “antibiotics” qualified with “oral”).  So why don’t I care?  I remember the last time I accompanied a friend to pick up a prescription for 2 weeks of one of the common antibiotics.  The sum total of her bill was…drum roll please…

$0.50.

That’s right.  Publix will now give you about 50 cents off your pharmacy bill.  Woo-fuckin-hoo.

  • Of course, it might just be a cost saving measure on their part. If they normally cost $0.50, then I would imagine that it costs more than that to process that $0.50 payment, meaning that by giving them away, they could do away with the expense of processing that $0.50 payment, and save money in the long run.

    Just a thought.
  • Maybe you misunderstand - these drugs cost $.50 before health insurance. Their patents have all run out and they are cheap as hell to mass produce.
In other words, it would be much more beneficial if they would, say, give $2.00 off all prescriptions, rather than giving away the stuff that they already sell to you at effectively the cost of transportation.
  • Maybe I'm off base, but I'd imagine this would help people with little to no health insurance. Less so for dicks that get 100% of their health care covered. Thanks for weighing in though :-D. Dick.
